Softball powers into final

Softball head coach Kris Thompson meets the infield at the dugout after Cloe Mallory retired the side in the fourth inning of the Lady Bulldogs 9-0 win in the semifinals.

The softball team is into the championship game after defeating Kalamazoo Christian 9-0 in the semifinal Friday morning.

The girls will play for the school’s first bracket-based state championship at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Secchia Stadium in East Lansing.

The Bulldogs got off to a fast start, scoring three runs in the first. They added two in the fifth, three in the sixth and a final run in the top of the seventh.

Madison Milner and Makayla Henckel hit home runs and Cloe Mallory added a triple and scored on a throwing error to lead the Lady Bulldogs.

“It was crazy. I was so focused-in on that at bat,” Henckel said. “When I hit it, I just knew it was gone.”

Senior starting pitcher Cloe Mallory pitched out of a bottom of the seventh bases loaded jam and caught the final out of the game.

“I was thinking that I needed to stay focused and pull it out for my team,” Mallory said.
